St Mary's Church, Richmond

Our contribution to the 950th Anniversary of Richmond Castle and town is a concert of music from the 20th and 21st centuries. We were told that the plan for the year long celebrations was to start with a focus on the 11th century and then follow on century by century to our own times at the end of the year. The concert which we had in mind anyway fitted perfectly into their time-line. We suggested adding a commission for the occasion from Mark Harrison, a choir member who has written lots of gorgeous music including the Christmas cantata Jubilate Natale that we sang at our 2017 concert. The 950 Committee were thrilled with this idea and persuaded the District Council to sponsor it with a commissioning fee.

We are sure our audience will enjoy this work which celebrates the town.

Unfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic has played havoc with many of the celebrations that were intended for this year but we hope that ours can come through relatively unscathed.

If you attend our concerts you can't fail to notice our impressive staging which looks permanent but is actually totally collapsible. It is stored between concerts by local removals company Dowse of Richmond Ltd who deliver it and remove it afterwards. We would like to thank them here for that service to us.

Richmondshire Choral Society would also like to thank Richmond Town Council  and Company of Grocers, Mercers and Haberdashers of Richmond  for grants enabling us to buy the new steps needed to provide access across our staging to an Emergency Exit from the east end of St Mary's Church, and a new piece of staging to replace the ramp or extend the back row of staging when necessary. . Pictures and more information elsewhere on this site.

Thank you also to Lidl supermarket, recently arrived in Richmond, who have generously supplied the fruit juice for our concerts.
